Measuring with Metrics
What is the Metric System and Why do Teachers Utilize it in the Classroom?
The metric system is a unit based system of measurement in decimal form. Teachers should want their students to have a basic understanding of the metric system. Teachers and scientists utilize the metric system in their lives or classroom because it easier to write and understand. The conversions in the metric system are much simpler because there is only one unit for each type of measurement.

Prefixes to Keep in Mind When Using The Metric System
- Centimeter= 1/100 of the base unit (makes the base unit smaller)
- Millimeter= 1/1000 of the base unit (makes the base unit smaller)
- Kilogram= 1000 times the base unit (makes the base unit larger)
Measuring Length using The Metric System
The basic unit for measuring length is meters.
When measuring metrically you can also use centimeters and millimeters. There are 100 centimeters in one meter and there are 1000 millimeters in one meter. Depending on what you are measuring the length will determine if you use meters, centimeters, or millimeters. If you are measuring the length of a soccer field you might want to use meters, if you are measuring the length of a pencil centimeters works best, and if you are measuring a paper clip you can use millimeters.

Measuring Capacity with The Metric System
The base unit for measuring capacity or volume is liters.
Capacity is how much liquid something can hold or how much space is inside of a container. The metric system uses liters and milliliters to determine capacity. Liters for example are often used to tell us how many liters of soda or water we are buying. As for milliliters, 1000 of them equal one liter.
Liters can be used to measure larger quantities of a fluid.

While smaller quantities of liquid can be measured by using milliliters.
Measuring Temperature
A device called a thermometer is used to measure temperature. There are two different ways of measuring temperature, they are Fahrenheit and Celsius. Even though there are two ways to of measuring temperature, the metric system uses only Celsius. Celsius is on the left side of the thermometer and goes up by tens. Where the red line goes up to is where you read what temperature it is, if you are reading it in Celsius it will be on the left, and if you are reading it in Fahrenheit it will be on the right.
